Karen started her career in private legal practice and the courts, then joining the Attorney-General’s Department, where she was a senior executive for nearly 20 years, leading a diverse range of legal policy responsibilities, including relating to the courts, family law and family and sexual violence. Karen has also worked as a volunteer refugee lawyer in Bangkok and a legal policy adviser in Papua New Guinea. Following her formal retirement from the public service in 2023, Karen is now balancing consultancy work and volunteering with other personal pursuits.
